About This Project
The Shapard Tower, located at the Chapel on campus, at 134 feet tall, contains a 56 bell Paccard mechanical instrument of cast bronze carillon bells with a great bourdon of 7,000 pounds, musical note B flat; the smallest carillon bells weigh in at 22 pounds.
The overall weight of the carillon bells is 23 tons.
The carillon bells are played manually with a traditional wooden baton keyboard, called a clavier, by a carillonneur and the music cascades over the campus.
The campus location of the bell tower is ideal as it is nestled into the beautiful campus without heavily trafficked roads; a peaceful location for the large set of carillon bells.
