About This Project
Over 20 years ago, a gracious donor gave a peal of four swinging bells that sound clock chimes, tolls, and celebration peals from the tower of the historic Christ Episcopal Church, New Bern, North Carolina. These four bells were quickly followed by 21 additional carillon bells for a total of 25 bells to play hymns and spiritual songs.
Over the last few years, additional bells were funded and given as memorial gifts for loved ones in the congregation. However, over the last several months the final 13 bells have been given, finishing the carillon of 40 musically tuned cast bronze bells.
The extent of the carillon from 1,500 pound G3 bell, A3, B3, then chromatic to the 29 pound C7 bell provides the musical range necessary and important to be able to play an almost unlimited musical repertoire.
Built in 1750, the historic church congregation is on their third church building that will last for perhaps a few hundred years more, the completion of the cast bronze carillon is an exciting accomplishment in the life of Christ Church. The almost 25-year-long project that will last for hundreds, even thousands of years is now complete.
